About The Royal
Meet The Royal
The Royal is one of Canada’s foremost mental health care, teaching and research hospitals. The Royal's mandate is simple: to help more people living with mental illness and addiction into recovery faster.
The Royal combines specialized mental health care, advocacy, research, and education to transform the lives of people living with complex and treatment-resistant mental illnesses.
The Royal wants to be a hospital without walls, meeting people where they are. It works with numerous community partners to support people’s mental health across their lifespan and spectrum of needs. For example, you might find staff from the Geriatric Psychiatry Program supporting the mental health needs of people living in a long-term care home or others from the Community Mental Health Program meeting with people in a shelter downtown.
The Royal’s primary role is to serve people 16 and older living with complex and persistent mental illness. Most of The Royal’s patients receive care without ever walking through its doors. Most of their patients live in eastern Ontario, but some of their specialized programs reach into northern Ontario, Quebec, and Nunavut.
Learn more about Shatter the Silence and the ACPR campaign
The Algonquin College Public Relations (ACPR) program runs a campaign every year to fundraise for a local charity and give students hands-on experience to succeed in the PR field. Since 1986, ACPR students have raised close to $500,000 in support of local organizations, including CHEO, the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre, LiveWorkPlay, Candlelighters, and the John Howard Society. This year’s campaign, titled “Shatter the Silence,” aims to raise money for The Royal Ottawa. The Royal combines specialized mental health care, advocacy, research, and education to transform the lives of people living with complex and treatment-resistant mental illnesses. The name Shatter the Silence was inspired by shattering the stigma that surrounds mental health.
